Beginning in the early 1990s, USAID helped strengthen health systems in countries across Eastern Europe and Eurasia. These programs targeted key areas of health systems, including financing, the workforce, medical products and technologies, health system management, health promotion, and quality of services and patient empowerment. Patient access, equity and outcomes have improved substantially in the region as a result of changes in these areas. The tools and approaches introduced by USAID over the last twenty years will allow countries in Eastern Europe and Eurasia to continue transforming their health systems in response to the health needs of their people.
